Jeffrey R. Johnson is a partner at Scheer Law Group. Jeff is a trial attorney with 34 years of experience trying cases in state and federal courts, and has been admitted to practice law in Washington and Oregon. His practice currently focuses on the defense of pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers, as well as other manufacturers in product liability litigation, the defense of class actions, commercial litigation, and handling significant catastrophic injury and wrongful death cases. Jeff has extensive experience as local counsel and lead local counsel in Multi-District Litigation (MDL) cases. Jeff also has significant experience in the defense of medical malpractice cases, having defended these cases for over twenty years, defense of food borne illness cases (E Coli and Salmonella), and in handling matters for health care professionals involving the Washington State Medical Quality Assurance Commission, Department of Health, and Pharmacy and Dental Boards.
Jeff has tried over forty cases, many of which have been long trials with large amounts of money at stake. He has defended and tried cases involving claims as large as $75,000,000 and brought and tried cases involving claims in excess of $25,000,000. In 2013 and 2014, Jeff tried three significant cases in Kitsap, Pierce, and Snohomish Counties. In April and May 2013, Jeff (along with his co-counsel from Skadden Arps) defended the first product liability case ever tried against a major robotic surgery medical device manufacturer, in which the Plaintiffs asked the jury for $8,500,000, plus punitive damages. The Kitsap County jury found in favor of the company and returned a defense verdict after a six week trial. In February 2014, Jeff defended and tried a commercial truck versus car rear-end collision case in Snohomish County. Plaintiff requested an award of over $1,000,000 at mediation and trial, but the jury awarded Plaintiff $48,000 and found that she was 10% at fault even though she had been rear-ended.
Jeff has been named a Super Lawyer in the areas of Class Action and Mass Torts in 2013 and 2014. In 2012 and 2013, Jeff was recognized by Corporate Counsel Magazine as a “Top Lawyer in Health Care.” He has been recognized by Seattle Met Magazine as a “Top Lawyer in Washington” in 2010, 2013, and 2014. In 2003, Seattle Magazine rated Jeff as a “Top Lawyer in Personal Injury.” Jeff currently is rated with Martindale-Hubbell’s highest ranking, “AV Preeminent,” and he has been AV rated since 1987.
Jeff is a member of the International Association of Defense Counsel (IADC), and served as Chairman of the IADC Class Action and Multi-Party Litigation Committee in 2010 and 2011. He is also a member of the Defense Research Institute, including its Drug & Device Committee, and the Council for Litigation Management. From 1998-2012, Jeff served on the Board of Governors of Business Counsel, Inc.
